‘Weighed 105 kgs, even as I held my gorgeous son, didn’t feel happy: Sameera Reddy on postpartum depression

If we talk about motherhood, then more often than not it’s a pristine concept without any spots or flaws. The ever-sacrificing image of mothers is what stays with us and a slight deviation from the stereotypical image of mothers makes us uncomfortable. But, it is easier said than done.

Sameera Reddy, in an interview with the Humans Of Bombay, shared her journey on similar lines; about her postpartum depression. After slaying it in Bollywood with a fit body and amazing acting skills, her pregnancy with her first child left her feeling out of place.

She said, “When I got pregnant with Hans, my son, I thought that I’d be one of those page 3 moms posing away for the shutterbugs with a perfect bump. My vision of motherhood came from the glam world that I was from. But 9 months later, I weighed 105 kgs. And even as I held my gorgeous son, I didn’t feel happy; I slipped into postpartum depression.”

The grip on her journey and her life didn’t come easy. The process of unlearning things about motherhood and relearning them taught her to accept her journey of motherhood as it comes. There were lessons imparted in her through this journey, she proactively said, “I was 40, scared & bloated but I was determined to do everything that I’d missed out on before–I spoke about mood swings, & when I was 8 months pregnant, I did an underwater bikini shoot. That’s when women said to me, ‘You inspire me’. And guess what–I started with 90% male followers but now, 70% of them are women & that’s a big achievement for me. I even tell my kids– ‘Be whatever you want, but be honest to yourself.’

Sameera welcomed a baby girl in 2019.
